Eggs at Arnish :-)

Filed under: daily doings — lifeattheendoftheroad @ 5:49 am

Just after 5:00am and fresh out of the bath feeling almost human and relatively pain free 🙂 Posting has been a little sporadic of late due to being worn out in the evenings and far too busy during the day. A combination of fantastic weather and the ‘terrible twins’ leaving us both shattered during the evenings.

They’re not twins and they’re not really terrible, in fact the two brothers staying with us just now are quite endearing but at three and five they really are a bit of a handful 🙂 Thrust upon us at short notice along with Charlie the ‘wee dug’ it’s been a little chaotic at the ‘north end’ to say the least 🙂

Anyway in this brief ‘quiet time’ before they come charging down stairs I’ll try and catch up on Wednesdays work at least. Thursday will have to wait because my camera is still up at the new house site where I’ve been hiding for most of the day leaving wifey to deal with the boys 🙂

Wednesday dawned bright and clear and after feeding everyone we all headed south in the Land Rover to the surgery. Well I headed to the surgery whilst wifey, dugs, and boys went to visit Jessie at School Park. The back pain I’ve been enduring of late has been eased only by taking bucket loads of Tramadol, which I’m not too happy about so I’d got an appointment to see the doc.

As we’d had to drive the eleven miles down to Inverarish, Raasay’s largest settlement I took the trailer down to the shore at Clachan to load up with beach stones for the coarse part of my ‘slow sand filter’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_sand_filter  up at the new house.

Perhaps I can persuade our ‘terrible twins’ to carry them up there 🙂

It may look like a bit of a mess, and it is a tragedy to see a fine craft end up like this but the once proud ‘Golden Emblem’ had become a bit of an eyesore on Raasay’s beautiful shore.

Hopefully some ‘scrappie’ will be along shortly to ‘pick her bones’ up off the shore.

As that went really well and seemed to keep the boys occupied we decided to go for a picnic at Screapadale on Raasay’s eastern shore. I drove up to the new barn with the two apprentices and wifey set about making something to eat.

It was after our sausage sandwiches and a little light refreshment that things went a little pear shaped 😦 A sensible person would have reversed the trailer onto the beach leaving the Land Rover on firm ground. However, having large tyres a locking rear diff and a 9500lb winch on the front I drove onto the steep shingle beach and turned around. I’ve done this before and only did it now because I can (and have on several occasions) pull myself out with the winch using a convenient tree.

The only snag this time being that the Warn 9.5XP winch chose this particular day to die on me 😦 Not totally but enough to make life difficult, requiring that I keep getting out of the drivers seat and clobber it with a tree 😦 Probably getting up for £1000 now with VAT and delivery this ‘Rolls Royce’ of winches from Oregon in the States is on it’s second motor and I think this one is on its way out, or at least in need of stripping down and the brushes freeing off.

Letting the tyres down to about 5psi and a little digging had me out after around an hour but I did have visions of walking the two miles or so home for the ‘Tirfor’ 😦

Arriving back home to a car park full we put our fist eggs on sale at ‘the ‘farm gate’ and sold all eighteen, leaving us only one of the previous days nineteen to eat 🙂

Anyway, that’s it the house as awakened and I must go 😦

    • Morning Lucy,
you should be getting eggs any day now, probably around six a week from each hen depending on breed.
