Life at the end of the road

Fortunate for some :-)

Filed under: boats, daily doings — lifeattheendoftheroad @ 8:06 pm

Well, that’s it we’re firmly tied up to Scotland for an hour or so, my paint’s drying nicely after the days labours so I’ll batter out a few lines on here 🙂

The first day of July (yesterday) certainly didn’t feel like summer but at least it was dry and today more than made up for it, still not the high twenties they’re experiencing to the south but at least we’re into the serious double figures now, well the teens anyway 🙂 I left the house early this morning to load up my blue bins for the recycling, I’m not really into this ‘token recycling’ but the wife and ‘eco warrior’ insist 🙂 Don’t get me wrong, I’m big on reusing stuff, just check out what I’ve done with wine bottles 🙂 I just think the key to saving the planet is buying less cr4p in the first place and not sending all ours on an endless trip to China and back 🙂

Anyway as I rattled down a dry and virtually puddle free road for the first time in weeks with my bins rattling away behind me scaring all the rabbits I stopped to have a look through the binoculars at a boat.

A serious boat, in fact it was more of a ship than a boat and it had been anchored there in the Camas Bahn for two nights.

Continuing on my way I took the ‘low road’ unlike yesterday when I stopped for a while to watch JST’s chaps or should I say one of there chaps loading a trailer.

Well, I didn’t want to meet him on that narrow twisting road with the pair of us towing trailers 🙂

The ‘Fortunate Sun’

The day just flew by, a nice quiet morning enabling me to get on with some undercoating and a steady stream of tourists in the sunshine to make the day interesting.

I just loved this badge I saw on the back of a campervan 🙂

Lunch time saw me popping along the road to see my mate Willy and admiring the progress at the new house on the Avenue,

though the traffic was unusually heavy 🙂

Whilst doing my spell at the wheel the ‘mystery ship’ came south from Portree

 020711 014  020711 013

and it turned out to be MY Fortunate sun, a 54m motor yacht registered in the Cayman islands.

Though the description on the AIS screen made me chuckle ‘pleasure craft’ 🙂

Here she is passing Goat Island at a leisurely 10.8knts and here’s some info lifted from http://www.charterworld.com/index.html?sub=yacht-charter&charter=fortunate-sun-2422

The motor yacht FORTUNATE SUN is a 54 m 177 (ft) impressive steel vessel which was created at Oceanfast (Austal) and designed by Oceanfast and Tim Heywood. Sleeping 10 passengers and 12 qualified crew, motor yacht FORTUNATE SUN used to be Perfect Prescription which was her project name and/or yacht title. Ready for launch in 2003 the recent interior design reflects the endowment emanating from the boards of Tim Heywood.

M/Y FORTUNATE SUN (ex Perfect Prescription) was commissioned for a New Yorker in the pharmaceutical business. The motor yacht can be easily recognised with her grey hull and white superstructure.

The Building & Designing for Luxury Yacht FORTUNATE SUN

Oceanfast was the naval architect involved in the technical superyacht composition for FORTUNATE SUN. Her interior design was conceived by Tim Heywood. Oceanfast and Tim Heywood is also associated with the yacht general design work for this yacht. In 2003 she was actually launched with triumph in Fremantle and following sea trials and detailing was thereafter passed on to the yacht owner. Oceanfast (Austal) completed their new build motor yacht in Australia. The hull was constructed with steel. The motor yacht superstructure is fabricated largely from aluminiumandgrp. With a beam of 10.21 metres / 33.5 ft FORTUNATE SUN has spacious room. A fairly shallow draught of 2.74m (9ft) limits the number of worldwide marinas she can berth in, depending on their individual depth at low tide. She had refit maintenance and alteration work undertaken in 2008.

M/Y FORTUNATE SUN Engine Room & Speed:

Installed with twin MTU diesel main engines, FORTUNATE SUN will attain a maximum speed of 18 knots. Connected to her MTU engine(s) are twin screw propellers. Her total HP is 4730 HP and her total Kilowatts are 3481. For bow thruster maneuverability she was built with Schottel.

Much to my joy she dropped anchor in Churchton bay and a few people came ashore,

the tender probably cost more than my house 🙂

No advertising for Yamaha on the two monsters that powered this ‘flubba’ 🙂

Not really my thing but she did look very nice in front of Ben na Calliach 🙂

  1. Wow.. love the ‘tin can’ what a beauty…. and the Midgie badge is not bad either !

    • It was a bonny ‘tin can’ indeed She, looked even bonnier as it sailed north on a glass calm sea of gold in the sunset. Sadly I had a passenger who talked incessantly as we drove home and I never got a photograph 😦

  2. It was a beautiful day on Raasay today indeed! I was at the top of Duncaan when the Fortunate Sun came out of Portree bay. Spent an hour up there gazing at the incredible view as she passed by. Also got stuck on the Youth Hostel road when the tractor and timber were coming down, thankfully I’m still just in my wee Mazda so reversing back down wasn’t too tricky!

  3. Paul are those radar domes seems a bit overkill, from my point of view.

    Comment by Yorkshire Miner — July 3, 2011 @ 8:08 am

    • Morning Dave,

those domes will be satellite receivers for the phones, navigational equipment and TV, one has to keep in touch with the stock and commodities market you know 🙂

  4. Hi Paul.
Are you sure they weren’t looking for gold on Raasay, as it does have a history of minerals ?

    Comment by polite Scouser — July 3, 2011 @ 9:19 am

  5. Hi paul, i saw a vessel very similar to that one , except it had a white hull, heading up the Clyde last year. rumour had it that it was Paul Macartnys gin palace, as he was playing in one of the venues on clydeside. Either way both craft are stunning, although with the price of fuel as it is, im not jealous! But as the old addage goes if you need to ask you cant afford LOL!

    • Morning Gordon,

with 140,000lts of bunker capacity that’s around £112 000 just to fill her up in Portree with red diesel 🙂 Don’t think that they’d let me loose on board there with a paint roller, best just stick with the old Loch Striven 🙂

  6. just had another thought! imagine if Calmacs budget could stretch to that, your daily chunter across the water would be ‘slightly’ more luxurious !

  7. saw it gliding up the river liffey in Dublin yesterday at 8.30 or so in the evening, big oxygen music festival on starting today, could be one of the performers arriving or just the owners, thought I saw Beyonce in the wheelhouse but I must admit I had drink taken at the time.

  8. Was PJ Harvey on the boat, nearly sure I saw her in the hotel beside it, a couple of hours before it departed, on the 9th of July 2011. Was it borne for NYC? I think PJ Harvey may have been driven to the hotel in a grey stretch limo with shaded windows. If so the same limo drove down the quays alongside the boat on the 8th of July 2011. Did any of the crew/passangers stay in Bono’s Dublin Clarence Hotel. Who was on the boat? I am the father of a nearly 2 and a half year old beautiful boy “Daniel Matthew Clune”. • Morning Kevin,

the Heralds journalist can’t be much good, everyone knows the Fortunate Sun belongs to Reg Advocaat 🙂 As for who was on it, I have it from a good source http://www.skyeboat-trips.co.uk/ a cheeky chappy that managed to convince the people on board that they should charter his boat for an hour to view the sea eagles around the corner 🙂 That it wasn’t PJ Harvey 🙂
