Life at the end of the road

Still waiting :-(

Filed under: animals, daily doings — lifeattheendoftheroad @ 9:34 pm

Another fine day here on Raasay which I greeted with far more enthusiasm than yesterday, in fact I was up earlier than normal for a week day, let alone a Sunday. I spent an hour or so on the laptop catching up with blogging and the like before going out to check and feed the herd. Jamie Lee is still hanging on to the piglets she should have dropped two weeks ago but that’s probably more to do with my maths than her actual gestation period. Funnily enough I came across a post from two years ago https://lifeattheendoftheroad.wordpress.com/2009/06/15/well-and-trully-rocknessed/ and we were waiting for Jamie to farrow then, some things never change 🙂

Anyway after feeding everyone, shooting a pigeon and grabbing a quick egg sandwich I headed south and for the first time this week saw no deer.

It was a bonny day as I wound southwards down ‘Calum’s road’ with the sun highlighting an ancient wall leading up from the shore to the road ahead.

Unlike the dry stone one in yesterdays post little remains of this one and it is seldom noticeable, probably dating from a time when the low ground to the right was cultivated. In certain lights the ‘lazy beds’ are still visible but not today.

A few miles further down the road I stopped to look over to the ‘Golden cliff’ below Ben Tianavaig, a spot where sea eagles nest and are often visible.

When I was clam diving we’d often work the deep coral sand below here where it met the boulder slope at around 35m.

The day on the ferry was busy enough with a reasonable amount of traffic, a fire in the engine room, a fire in the passenger accommodation, a man overboard and a faulty alternator. The first three being drills and the latter sticking brushes 🙂

After the day at work was done I headed back to the croft and my happy pigs,

just look at them, Bramble’s five piglets quite contentedly grubbing about with Jamie Lee and two lovely stags on the croft opposite 🙂

The one on the left being the magnificent chap that was grazing below my wind turbine last night, the one on the right I’ve not seen for a while but I think he was the chap with only one antler during the winter.

Anyway, that’s it, I know it’s rubbish but you try writing something every night for three years 🙂

      • you are never lost for something to see in beautiful Raasay. and your posts are a real boost to those of us in exile from our bonnie island. Keep up the good work Paul. I need my daily fix. A wee picture or two of the rest of the Island would be wonderful on occassion too though I am aware that it is not a short hop to Arnish from the peir but when you are at the shop or visiting in Inverarish it would be ajoy to see that too.

      • Morning She, I will try and get out and about more 🙂 I did promise someone that I’d take a walk up temptation hill so it’s about time I did, I should also go and visit the broch, the BIG TREE, Hallaig and more.

Cheers and see you soon 🙂

  3. It’s never rubbish, Paul – with your eye for a camera it’s eternally spectacular! Keep it up, life wouldn’t be the same without my daily Raasay fix.
